The Beatles

On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2 Apple | CD LP

Forty songs, recorded between 1963 and 1964, plus later interviews. Jon Savage tunes in to The Beatles at The Beeb.

While not as revelatory as 1995′s The Beatles Live At the BBC, On Air is a very enjoyable collection. Three-quarters of the songs were taped on the run during 1963, so much of this sounds like a good humoured, slightly sloppy club set from that era. Rambunctious covers – The Hippy Hippy Shake, Lucille – are mixed in with material from the first two albums and some DJ banter, and a good time is had by all. There are several surprises: a tough version of Chuck Berry’s I’m Talking About You, an early Words of Love, covers of Lend Me Your Comb and Beautiful Dreamer. The sessions thin out as the material gets more complicated – check out the feedback sessions for I Feel Fine – but each disc ends with a real treat: one-on-one interviews with each Beatle from 1965 and 1966, talking as though it was yesterday.
