With a career spanning over four decades, Sir Elton John, one of the most commercially successful solo artists in popular music history, collected the coveted MOJO Hall Of Fame Award prior to the release of his new album ‘The Captain And The Kid’, an album which MOJO Magazine editor-in-chief Phil Alexander says “reaffirms his importance as a musician first and foremost”. The late Johnny Cash also cements his role as one of music’s seminal voices and ongoing influences by scooping The MOJO Catalogue Release of the Year Award (collected by his daughter Rosanne Cash) two years after his death, for the reissue that has rekindled interest in music that has stood the test of time.
The MOJO Best New Act Award went to British R&B sensation Corinne Bailey Rae - a deserved title, as she became only the fourth female British act in history to have their first album debut at number one. Corinne Bailey Rae follows in the footsteps of artists such as Chrissie Hynde who tonight picked up the MOJO Songwriter Award. With a career spanning over 30 years, Chrissie not only has a huge body of sucessful work, including numerous hit singles, but also has been an important spokesperson throughout her career on many important issues.
The MOJO Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to David Gilmour for his guitar playing and effortless vocal style that have given him superstar status both as an individual and as a member of Pink Floyd.
Another group who have had a huge impact on music over the past 30 years is Buzzcocks who tonight deservedly scooped the MOJO Inspiration Award. Says MOJO’s editor-in-chief Phil Alexander “Buzzcocks have avoided becoming a nostalgia act, keeping their work fresh and vital … Their impact on the likes of Nirvana, Green Day and Ash is evident”. The MOJO Hero Award, goes to Prince Buster, another artist that has had a huge impact on today’s music and society when he became the first producer to use Rastafarian musicians on a commercial recording.
The music scene would not be complete without Jools Holland, who has not only had a hugely successful solo career but is according to Phil Alexander “responsible for much of Britain’s musical well-being … Indeed, for most of the artists attending the MOJO Honours List, Later will be their only televisual outlet”. It is for this reason that Jools Holland collected the MOJO Medal Award tonight.
“The godfathers of British indie-rock”, Jesus And Mary Chain receive the MOJO Maverick Award for their groundbreaking use of the Wall-Of-Sound principle which has influenced at least two generations of acts following in their wake.
The MOJO Les Paul Award was awarded to a guitarist whose work matches the pioneering spirit of the guitar innovator who has lent his name to this award. “As the only man to play atop Buck House, Queen’s Brian May fits this bill perfectly. His sound remains unique, his power undimmed and his enthusiasm for his work ever bright” says Phil Alexander.

Been following this band since before Christmas when saw them at the Dublin Castle, Camden - bloody awesome live, much impressed, have to agree with The Jam's PR - suprised no one has signed them up yet but I'm sure its only a matter of time. Got their EP from itunes - 'Pressure' and love their track 'Tell Me'. Definitely a band to watch out for the future - have also noticed from their myspace recently that they play the Wye Fest on 7 June - so I've booked it into my diary and will certainly be there - thanks for the tip!
