VOTE GONG!

11:09 AM GMT 18/08/2006

So does the fromage-fest of Camembert Electrique top the warped genius of Flying Teapot? And where do the shimmering sounds of Shamal fit? Simply leave your comments on what you consider to be the most mind-blowing Gong releases here and we’ll compile our guide from your suggestions and print your thoughts on their finest work in the November issue of MOJO magazine.

[NB: All albums selected must have been released under the Gong moniker rather than by individual band members so Steve Hillage’s Fish Rising is out. So too are Daevid Allen manifold solo outings.]

Oh, and check out the Gong Unconvention – a gathering of the entire Gong Family. It happens at the Melkweg, Amsterdam, on November 3-5 and tickets are on sale now via Jonny Greene’s wondrous www.planetgong.co.uk site.

  • Oh I love this month's how to buy! I'll agree with the above, but I'll do a blow by blow descriptive in order of my top three preference:

Camembert Electrique takes top honors as my most favorite space jam epic, to be filed somewhere near In Search Of Space Hawkwind and the first two Soft Machine LPs. Odd balance of repeato riff space whisper anthems and jazzy breakdowns breaking free of the satellite, all held together with an irresistable indescribable joie de vivre. This is the angel's egg all the modern space jammer mothers of the acid temple are born out of. The zenith of pothead pixiedom.

Magick Brother, Mystic Sister is their acid folk debut, with a more stripped down feel and an emphasis on songwriting. It features my favorite tune of theirs; Glad To Sad To Say, a punk-primative page torn out out the Syd Barret songbook delivered with a loosely early Rough Trade DIY attitude, albeit with requisite space whispering. Quite necessarily stoned, but beautiful.

Continental Circus is more of the same riff pouding as Camembert, minus a bit of the jazzy element. A few extended anthemic tracks cut as a soundtrack to a biker film (anyone ever seen it?) which I rate just below the above as it seems more like an o.s.t. and less like an actual album. What it lacks in conceptual fullness it more than makes up with pure rocking fury. Their most hammer down pedal to the metal driving moment.

What followed is the Radio Gnome trilogy. Does anyone really want to seperate them? I like them, and they tend to be everyone's favorites, but the above three are the pinnacles in my book.

  • With a couple of exceptions my favourite Gong releases would all include the followings involvement.....

Allen, Smyth, Malherbe, Hillage, Moerlen, Blake, Howlett, so for me in order off favouritism it would have to be...

    1. You - The perfect coalesence of everything Gong.
    2. Camembert Electrique - Top notch acid spiked spacerock.
    3. The Flying Teapot - A masterclass in creative conceptuality.
    4. Live, etc - Jaw droppingly great, who needs a studio ?
    5. Angels Egg - My introduction to the world of the PHP's and I haven't left since

+ Dunno if this counts but Planet Gong ( Daevid, Gilli, Here & Now Band) - Live Floatin' Anarchy '77 is another favourite. Mama Maya Mantrum particularly.

Finally a big shout for the sadly departed Pip Pyle and Pierre Moerlen with vibes to their family and friends.

  • The Radio Gnome Trilogy is an extraordinary extraterrestrial adventure...the trip begins with the first note of Flying Teapot and doesn't end until the last groove of You. Have a cup of tea - and breathe in the colour.

  • This is tough. I absolutely adore everything I have heard from Gong, but my favorite is Cambert Electrique. There is something about the punk energy and manic freaks gone out of control in the studio trippyness. 'Foghats dig holes in space' and 'You can't kill me' always end up on my mix tapes.

You is also genius, where the punk factor was somewhat replaced by a jazzier more technical edege. But in no way did the music lose it's spirit, it just got more complex.

    Long Live Daevid Allen!
