Currently still in production, Such Hawks, Such Hounds has been written, directed and produced by the California-based John Srebulas and Jessica Hundley, and traces the bowel-punishing, third-eye-goosing subgenre from its influential beginnings in Kyuss’s Palm Desert lair to its current heavy psych manifestations, including Black Mountain and Dead Meadow.
It’s packed with young men with large beards and plaid shirts hazily contemplating the important questions – like “what is heavy?” and “why can’t we all get a bong?” – while blasted deserts and sun-dappled woods provide a, like, er, really meaningful backdrop. Along the way, the film-makers probe the secrets of the “brown note” – the mythic ultra-low vibration that causes the unwary to defecate spontaneously. Think of it as Decline Of Western Civilisation Pt II meets Slacker on a diet of too much Black Sabbath, if there can ever be too much Black Sabbath.
Such Hawks, Such Hands should emerge in some form around the end of the year. Meanwhile, the concept raises a number of heavy questions: like, what other obscuro sub-cultures are crying out for a documentary? New Rave? Grindie? Screamo? Your nominations, please…
