Bob Hoskins IS Jamie T in new video

1:10 PM GMT 10/07/2007

1) That Jamie T video in full. The posh voice is much-missed poet John Betjeman.

2) Chevy Chase smugging it up and belittling the author in Paul Simon’s 1986 video for You Can Call Me Al.

3) Robert Downey Jr stealing the show in an empty mansion for Elton John’s 2001 cred-reviving I Want Love.

4) A tiny Robert Carlyle “Growing up” in Oasis’ shoddy, erm, “allegorical” vid for 2002’s v. poor Little By Little.

5) A scraggy Rhys Ifans showing off his moves in Oasis’ shameless Dead End Street/60s kitchen sink pastiche vid for 2005’s The Importance of Being Idle.

6) The entire cast of Paul Thomas Anderson’s operatic 1999 melodrama Magnolia (Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore and Tom Cruise) mouthing along to and chiming in with Aimee Mann’s downbeat pull-yourself-together ballad Wise Up

We’re guessing that Paul Simon started this whole celeb lip syncing thing with Al, and that he was influenced by the 1981 Hollywood version of Dennis Potter’s Pennies From Heaven. So, did Potter start it all or was it Tom Cat lip-syncing to Louis Jordan’s Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby in the 1946 Tom and Jerry short Solid Serenade?

Do you have any other examples of stars lip-syncing in pop videos? A mere guest appearance is not sufficient!
