Where the hermetic world of post-relationship despair got the soundtrack it deserves.
Released at the tail-end of a career renaissance that began with her soundtrack for Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 mega-melodrama Magnolia, Lost In Space found the former Til Tuesday vocalist adrift in the deep space of human desire. On first listen all is sweet and optimistic but beneath the sinuous melodies lurks a romantic Catch 22 where kisses are “like respirators” and love and anger “come as a pair”. Yet coupled with the album’s graceful pace and fugged production, Mann’s languorous delivery bestows a strange, drugged bliss upon this Sartrean hell of clashing couples. By the album end - our narrator frozen in her car at a stop sign, “as red turns into green turning into yellow” - a terrifying moment of urban crack-up has become heavy with the doped inertia of romantic melancholy, and its unfathomable erotic undertow.

Couldn’t agree more. Whenever I hear one of these oughties female singer-songwriters, they seem lacking in depth next to Mann. Great cameo in the Big Lebowski, too!
