Radiohead: By Kevin Westenberg, 2001
“Looking back on it now, I was not prepared at all,” says Kevin Westenberg of his landmark Radiohead shoot. “I just turned up at their Oxford offices with fear, a flashlight and some film.”
Westenberg’s plan, to half-light the band as if pinpointed by flashlights, seemed to chime with the Radiohead’s post-OK Computer aloofness, as if their Kid A song, How To Disappear Completely, had come to life. But given singer Thom Yorke’s reputation for cussedness, he was unprepared for the levels of affability on set.
“Thom made some sort of joke, then he head butted me in the chest – in a nice way. It surprised the hell out of me, but instantly put me at ease.”
Westenberg has photographed all the greats – many, including U2, The White Stripes, Liam Gallagher, for MOJO – yet he reserves a special kind of admiration for Radiohead.
“They’ve kind of defined a new way of doing rock. But even so, the thing distinguishes them from everyone else is Thom’s voice. I subconsciously must’ve been thinking about that when I lit just his mouth. I never would’ve expected in a million years that Mojo would have actually put that on the cover!”
