It’s been nearly two years in the making, and The Cure’s new studio album now looks as though it will be released in two different versions according to frontman Robert Smith.
"I'm making this record because I want to enjoy the process and be proud of the finished result,” Smith told Billboard magazine. “It isn't a commercial concern for me. What will probably happen is that a double album will come out like a limited edition, mixed by me... A single-disc version, which I assume will be primarily chosen by the label, might get mixed by someone else in order to have a different thing.”
At a time when fans are increasingly challenged to spend money on different formats and high-end boutique releases, Smith also insists that he has taken extra steps to ensure that this kind of simultaneous release is not viewed as exploitative.
“There's a concern Cure fans will feel like they have to get both, but the fact is, I've agreed to sell the double version at a single album price because I feel that strongly about it,” he says. “It is almost impossible to get a double album nowadays. I naively thought my standing as an artist would push aside all objections, but the world gets ever more commercial as it turns."
The album itself is described by Smith as “stripped down and in-your-face”, the fact that the singer uses a track by Sheffield instrumental post-rock crew 65 Days Of Static to soundtrack his MySpace page suggesting that it may also be one of the band’s heavier outings.
Due out in Spring 2008 via Geffen, the as yet untitled album will also be followed by an extensive world tour, including the following European shows:
