As a broadcaster and entrepreneur his place in British musical history was already assured during his lifetime. But now, just over four months after his death in August, Factory boss and Haçienda founder Tony Wilson is set to have his portrait hung in London’s National Portrait Gallery in a move that confirms his wider social significance.
The portrait used to commemorate Wilson’s contribution to British music and cultural impact was by photographer Kevin Cummins at his beloved Haçienda club in 1985. As our version shows, it depicts the ever-gregarious Wilson between two pillars peeking coquettishly at the camera.
“The shot captures the essence of Wilson. In his lair, really pleased with himself, playfully hiding from the VAT man. Er probably…” comments photographer Cummins. “It represents a period when we thought Manchester was the centre of the Universe. It was then, and, Mancunians still think it is. And who's to say they're wrong...”
Cummins’ photograph will be the NPG’s Portrait Of The Month for December and will then be housed in the main collection.
Kevins Cummins is also producing a limited edition of signed prints that will be sold with the blessing of Wilson’s partner Yvette Livesey, the proceeds of which will go to two charitable causes of great significance – the Manchester Royal Infirmary (Kidneys for Life charity) and Christie's Hospital (which was were Tony himself was treated).
The prints are handmade 16 x 20 inch gelatin silver archive photographic prints in an edition of 30 and cost £450 (including VAT) each, plus £10 for postage and packing (for UK and Europe). They are available by emailing kevin@kevincummins.co.uk
