Suite of beauteous reveries from former Idiot O’Clock man and Org Records chief, Shinji Shibayama
The name translates as On The Beach, in tribute to the Neil Young album, and Shinji Shibayama shares with ol’ Shakey a knack with songs that go on and on and on. Even so, “Only four tracks! Some previously released!” is not an irresistible sell for an album in this day and age, though when every second is this sublime everything is justified. Red House Painters, Galaxie 500, The Pastels in mantric mode: all are signposts but the destination is unique. Whether it’s the perma-renewing, folksy lullaby of The True World, the sparkling indie canter of Anxiety or the billowing, 20-minute-long psych caress of The True Sun (imagine the lost third side of Spacemen 3’s Playing With Fire album) Shibayama and his singing, drumming muse Masako Takeda get inside a moment of perfection and stretch it until the joy is unbearable. Then they stretch it some more. Amazing.
