Afghan Whigs
Uptown Avondale EP

The 1992 apogee of that most short-lived of sub-genres: grunge-soul.

Afghan Whigs

As our editor spins an entire LP of jazz Led Zeppelin covers I’m reminded of a similarly incongruous and oh, too fleeting moment in the early ’90s when grunge got soul. Whigs leader Greg Dulli (imminently to return as half of godless duo The Gutter Twins with Mark Lanegan) certainly had a plaintive enough vocal style to beg, scream and shout through this EP of soul covers (and continues to do so to this day in Twilight Singers live sets). While he’s no Freda Payne, his Band Of Gold is genuinely emotional, his wedding night anguish spilling more from the guts than the heart. True Love Travels On A Gravel Road falls a little short of Percy Sledge’s vocal range, granted, but Greg means it, man. The Supremes Come See About Me is a joy, Dulli perfectly recast as the Ugly American Ms Ross. And Al Green’s Beware is inspired, though I’m sure the good Reverend was rightly horrified. Rebirth Of The Cool, a reworked original from Congregation (there known as Milez Is Ded) rounds things off with a glimpse of how rock could be funky without recourse to slap bass and testosterone (are you listening, Chili Peppers?).

  • Couldn't agree more with the review of this classic ep . Greg Dulli always had more in common with Otis Redding and James Carr than any of the grunge brigade (serious chest beaters like Vedder and Cornell).
If you've not heard this , please rush to your nearest record shop and buy/order along with 'Gentlemen ' and ' Black Love '.
I mean, how can you not love someone with a pair of white suede shoes like Dullis.
