New York acoustic collective unleash waves of celestial, ambient unrest.

Akron/Family

Few have chosen to travel the path that runs between the outer fringes of folk and the darkened edges of improv jazz, the journey being perhaps too much for all but the most robust of souls. But count the brave hearts in Akron/Family among that small band of fearless adventurers. Assisting them on their travails on this landmark second album is Chicago free jazz drummer extraordinaire Hamid Drake with whom they recorded these seven tracks in the space of two days sandwiched between live shows. The effect of the ensuing sleep depravation is feverish near-delirium which permeates the seven tracks that make up this multi-layered, hypnotic acoustic-based tour de force. Nine minute-plus opener Blessing Force swoops from percussive tribalism into happy clapping, before descending into honking skronkery; the acoustic wonder of Gone Beyond nods to Zep and Roy Harper; The Rider (Dolphin Song) meanwhile is a free-jazz noise-fest where thumping electronics ride an infectious rhythm. The overall effect is unique and euphoric, with Meek Warrior setting the scene for Akron/Family’s equally wondrous and towering third offering, last year’s Love Is Simple.
