Straight From The Heart

The forecast is rain, rain, rain.

Ann Peebles

The East St Louis soul singer’s best-known song is I Can’t Stand The Rain, but out of deference to the sodden state of the land, try this slice of dynamite recorded the year before the deluge. It even, forecasts ‘Rain’ in I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home as she sits brooding, love-starved and wanting another woman’s husband on a wet night (does the phrase “every raindrop I heard against my window pane” ring bells?). As this album’s title suggests, the songs here are situated firmly in love games territory and she’s thoroughly convincing in all guises from joyful celebration (Slipped Tripped And Fell In Love) to tired, exasperated resignation (I’ve Been There Before) and sheer disgust and anger (a blistering version of Bobby Bland’s I Pity The Fool). I’m sure she’d now disavow the dependence of How Strong Is A Woman (“A woman is as strong as her need for the man she loves”), but mostly, she is self-possessed and forthright (99 Pounds, I Take What I Want). Producer Willie Mitchell’s powerhouse Hi rhythm team and the ubiquitous Memphis Horns set up a grinding, driving pulse from the get-go. Don’t forget your brolly.
