Piano pop’s ’90s renaissance in one hi-larious package!

Ben Folds Five

Unashamedly theatrical, undeniably accomplished and consistently inventive, this trio’s alt-pop debut has the capacity to annoy certain listeners to the point of mental collapse. Believe me – I’ve cleared many a room by insisting everyone listen to Philosophy’s nimble-fingered licks or Alice Childress’s rousing chorus harmonies. I think it has something to do with the absence of guitar. You see in the BFF universe the piano leads the charge – some people immediately think they’re being marched into a West End matinee against their will. I blame Rent. But this isn’t a record defined by the lack of a six-string. Indeed, it’s the strident chord sequences, sweet melodies, comic vignettes and grand ambition that make Ben Folds Five a plucky, piano-perfect collection always worth revisiting.

But, Ben Folds shows how good piano-led geek rock can be.
