Led Zep saluted this blues legend at their recent reunion gig. Here’s why...
January is the month for penance and reassessment, when we pay for the indulgences of December 25 and 31 and determine to mend our wicked ways. People, there is no better way to scourge the spirit and flay the soul than by immersing yourself in the scarifying blues of Blind Willie Johnson, one of the great guitar-singer evangelists. Portents of hellfire and damnation, advice on speedy repentance and balm for the sinner, all are hollered by Johnson’s brusque, devil-chasing vocal power. Moreover, his driving guitar style is clearly one of the stronger roots of Led Zeppelin’s ‘band’ style, to say nothing of the seed of the vocals of Tom Waits, Seasick Steve and their gruff like. Blinded at the age of seven by his stepmother, Johnson left a meagre amount of music, about 30 recorded tracks, but what an utterly convincing body of work. Just as gospel can be so uplifting to even the hardiest card-carrying aetheist, so Johnson’s stern, thrilling blues – Everybody Ought To Treat A Stranger Right, When The War Was On, Praise God I’m Satisfied – will grip you, and hold tight.

One of the most extraordinary and terrifying voices in blues music. Be sure to check out his "Let Your Light Shine On Me" especially around the half-way point. Life changing stuff!
