THIS MONTH’S MOJO featured the warts’n’more warts story of The Cult, the punks-turned-goths-turned hard rockin’ muthas whose unlikely belief in themselves finds itself rewarded by a new lease of life in 2008. In it we promised an online video playlist of their most jaw-dropping moments, and here it is...
Ian Astbury: poet warrior!
Then fronting Southern Death Cult, Astbury proves what separates him from the goth-rock chaff. You didn’t get this from the March Violets bloke!
Spiritwalker on The Tube
Dig the face-paint, yeah! Astbury apes the cover of The Cult’s Dreamtime album. Billy Duffy’s Gretsch White Falcon does the rest. "Eskimos"* do some "chicken dancing"**
She Sells Sanctuary (video)
Mark “Big Country” Brzezicki’s drum intro detonates. A stick-thin Astbury (those were the days!) high-steps imperiously. The song that launched a thousand bandanas...
Love Removal Machine on Whistle Test, 1987
An early glimpse of the remodelled Cult, touting the bone dry rock sound of their Rick Rubin-produced Electric album. Plus! Billy Duffy’s biggest ever hair!!
Ian is Jim Morrison
Perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea. Astbury joins Krieger and Manzarek to reconstitute The Doors. Break On Through To Another Pie, anyone?
Kyuss’s John Garcia sings The Cult’s Lil’ Devil... at a wedding!
It’s not just ridiculous music journalists who like The Cult. Oh no. Enjoy the stoner rock legend give it some Ian. What a wedding!
And finally, Astbury plugs Vancouver!

Ian and his lady friend in a soppy interview about their favourite Canadian cupcake consortium. We kid you not!
--------------------------------------------------
* Eskimos = elite goth-punk vanguard who liked to get topless and punch each other at gigs.
** Chicken Dancing = a "dance" in which participants strutted aggressively, flapping their arms in an attempt to painfully elbow their "mates". What larks!

That video in the cupcake shop really made me question my love for the Cult, and it made me wanna puke up some cupcakes. The Cult videos, on the other hand, rocked!

Anal retentive moment:
Eskimos were specifically fans of The Mission and not a general catch all term for fans of any old Goth band.

RE: coffeepotman
I too was a little disturbed, being a solid fan for over 20 yrs. I think it was deliberate on his part, I am sure he is laughing his ass off knowing what Cult fans would think of this.

The Mission were 'any old goth band'... a poor facsimile of the Sisters, Death Cult and the early pioneers at the peak of their powers. Big in Leeds with part-time goths.
