John Stewart: 1939-2008

John Stewart, folk troubadour and one of The Kingston Trio's chief songsmiths, died on Saturday in his hometown of San Diego after suffering a stroke. He was 68.

Having left his first folk outfit, The Cumberland Three, in 1961, Stewart promptly joined The Kingston Trio at the behest of original members Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds. The grorp would go on to record 12 albums together before disbanding in 1967.

Renowed as a furiously hard-working artist, Stewart began recording the now classic folk-country opus, California Bloodlines in 1969, having already secured huge chart success in late '67 by penning The Monkees' Daydream Believer.

In 1979 his Top 10 album Bombs Away Dream Babies produced the hit single Gold, and included contributions from Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

Stewart's songs have been recorded by the likes of Joan Baez, Roseanne Cash, Nanci Griffith and Anne Murray.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
