King Crimson

Having declared the band “completely over for ever” late in ‘74, seven years later guitarist Robert Fripp admitted “King Crimson has a life of its own”, conferring the familiar moniker on his new outfit and using their initial name of Discipline to title their new album. Musically, KC1981 – who included ex-drummer Bill Bruford, stick-bass iconoclast Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon), and guitarist Adrian Belew (Zappa, Bowie, Talking Heads) - picked up where Fripp’s post-punk set, Exposure, had left off. Roisterous opener Elephant Talk sets the tone for the frenetic six tracks that follow, Crimson’s trademarked technical precision being augmented by a bold neo-new wave edge. The title track and Frame By Frame are skittering pieces of funk-tinged math-rock; The Sheltering Sky is as ambient as its title suggests; Matte Kudasai (Japanese for “please wait”) is a brooding ballad; while the stand-out track, the gonzoid prog-punk of Thela Hun Jingeet, features Belew, secretly recorded by Fripp, ranting frantically at being harassed both by gangs then the police during an ill-fated afternoon stroll through Notting Hill. As intricate and yet as direct as the Peter Saville sleeve that housed it, Discipline both re-energised Crimson and attracted a new audience. Today, its impact continues to resonate among contemporary artists ranging from Battles to Porcupine Tree.
