MOJO Rising Stars On Tour

STRAIGHT OUTTA SOUTHEND, These New Puritans arrive with references including Gang Of Four, the Wu-Tang Clan and Dr Feelgood, not to mention 16th Century occult mathematician Dr John Dee.

The band – that’s frontman Jack Barnett and his drumming twin brother George, plus synth player Sophie Sleigh-Johnson and bassist Thomas Hein – represent these manifold inspirations on the fine long-player Beat Pyramid, full of engagingly terse, beat-driven art-rock jam-packed with ideas and bold notions.

MOJO’s Roy Wilkinson says, “It’s what The Klaxons might sound like if they weren’t so given to the easy opiate of mere pleasure… say hello to the new necromantics.” Jack Barnett, meanwhile, says: “There’s no fixed formation, we just become whatever we like.”

Numerology AKA Numbers

Warp-label electro scunge and percussive guitars lead us into this accusatory rumination on the true meaning of numbers one to ten, which then shifts into a melodic chorus. We can feel an Enochian Magick phase coming on!

Colours

“If not now, then when?” demands Barnett, in this Wire-like piece of barracking and beats played backwards. The mystery is enticing, and will the repeated “gold, gold, gold” lead into a quantum entanglement with the Klaxons’ Golden Skans?
