IN THE PAST, Sarabeth Tucek has sung with Smog’s Bill Callahan and Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and so impressed Bob Dylan that he invited her on the road to support him.
Having achieved some notoriety as “Anton’s sister” in the chapter of the Brian Jonestown Massacre doc, Dig!, where the deranged Newcombe kicks a heckler at LA’s Knitting Factory in the head, it’s time for Tucek to accept plaudits in her own right.
Listen to the singer-songwriter ’s self-titled debut – co-produced by Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, Ryan Adams) - and see just what it is that these discerning figures heard in the New Yorker-turned-Los Angeleno. It is, as MOJO’s Martin Aston commented, “a beautifully bruised peach that expands on Mazzy Star and Cat Power’s nocturnal delights, with baroque-pop charm and even some Crazy Horse-style rumblings… with the chocolatey tones of a Karen Carpenter, and lyrics rife with broken dreams and slightly sinister recriminations.”
Fiddle about with the MOJO Player to hear tracks by Sarabeth Tucek...
Hey You
Sparse, bittersweet rumination on dead love affairs, on the country hand-side. “I only know I used to love you” she says. “Nothing lasts.” Gulp.
Holy Smoke
Intro’d by guitar and Tucek’s low, close-up voice, this song of vengeance slow burns into a jagged axe workout. God told her to do it, apparently.
Those tour dates in full...
Monday 21st January / London, The Social
Tuesday 22nd January / London, Water Rats
Wednesday 23rd January / London, The Fly
There’s also a single, Something For You, released by Echo on February 25.
