Country-rock’s Genesis and Revelation...
The cover says it all: the band shimmer in Rhinestone-encrusted Nudie suits, the ground is strewn with broken timber and two L.A. models are draped in the doorway of a ramshackle hut, dressed to kill. The glammed-up, rock-powered C&W sounds found on the Burrito Brothers’ debut are always attributed to their far-out frontman, Gram Parsons. But, now that Parsons sits firmly ensconced in popular music’s grand pantheon, spare a thought for his long-suffering cohort Chris Hillman. Not only did Hillman give the Georgia boy his big break by inviting him to replace David Crosby in The Byrds, he soon went on to secure the perfect Hollywood bolthole in which the pair – then both separated from their old band and other halves – could smoke grass, listen to George Jones and Lefty Frizell and write songs. Hillman’s baleful Sin City, the rambunctious Christine’s Tune and their covers of Southern soul classics (The Dark End Of The Street, Do Right Woman) all satisfyingly conjure this self-styled “Cosmic American Music”. But the undeniable highlight is Parsons’ cracked vocal delivery on centrepiece ballad Hot Burrito #1 – the perfect combination of frailty and power.

I agree, this is a Grade-A classic (though best to draw a veil over the closing track). But why was the Burritos' follow-up album such a disappointment?

You're right, jon. This is the real thing but by the time they recorded the second lp, Gram's "drugs use "put and end to the band. Anyway, I've been a fan of Chris Hillman since the Byrds'debut 'till the Desert Rose Band. Chris played on a number of "sessions" outside his regular bands, always with great results. For example, Jon, you should listen to "GENE CLARK WITH THE GOSDIN BROTHERS"(Gene is a original Byrd!), or "THE FANTASTIC EXPEDITION OF DILLARK & CLARK"(Gene, again!)not forgetting Gram Parsons'THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS". Then, try Michael Nesmith and the first national band "COMPLETE"(yes, he used to be a Monkee but he's a true artist.) And then, have you ever heard about POCO? now, that's country-rock at its best!

Can anybody give a name to the model on the front and back cover in the purple mini-dress? Aside from Grams musical talent, I envy him getting to chat to this model for a few hours on set (Theough he doesn't seem too interested. I understandhe liked blonds anyway, but this could be rumor!
