X-Ray Spex
Germ Free Adolescents

Happy 30th birthday to the sax-fuelled attack-dog of post-punk.

X-Ray Spex

Some records always make me think of my dad. Drawn to the edges of punk by his Spartist political affiliations, he’d help organise the odd Rock Against Racism show (The Cravats at Redditch College Of FE – not quite The Pistols at The 100 Club, but this was Redditch) and picked up the odd punk and New Wave album to add to the collection of (largely) classical and folk. One of these was Sham 69’s Tell Us The Truth (bought for the sleeve I suspect), which even with our limited degree of punk immersion we suspected to be a bit rubbish. The other was Germ-Free Adolescents, which instantly entranced me with its shrill, bug-eyed attack. Stick it on now – in its 30th Anniversary Year – and it sounds just as good, cheap’n’nasty like the consumer culture singer Marion “Poly Styrene” Elliot lambastes in the savage Art-I-Ficial and the eerie, skeletal title track (a Top 20 hit!). Investigate Castle’s recent remastered reissue – which adds the essential Oh! Bondage, Up Yours! – but don’t tell dad I’ve still got his vinyl copy.

  • Yes a really excellent album and one that has a very special place in my life as it was the first album that I bought with money from my first wages. Dear God was it really thirty years ago....!!!! Incidentially I still have my original vinyl copy, plus all the singles and 'Live At The Roxy' and demos collection LP's. I'm still considering whether or not to buy this reissue CD so to get the Peel Sessions.

  • RE: Simon F.

The "Let’s Submerge" Anthology Castle put out in '06 has the Peel sessions, but then it also has all the Roxy and demo stuff you already have.

If you end up going for the GFA reissue, please help me with something. It sounds, if anything, more savage than the vinyl. Is this my ears playing tricks or have they remixed it quite aggressively?

    Warrior-warri-warri-urgh!
