2 – The Doors’ Jim Morrison collapses before a show in Amsterdam. Ray Manzerek, Robbie Krieger and John Densmore perform as a trio.
4 – Several US radio stations decide to ban The Rolling Stones' latest single, Street Fighting Man. Mick Jagger: “I’m rather pleased to hear they have banned as long as it’s still available in the shops. The last time they banned one of our records in America, it sold a million”.
7 - The Doors play The Roundhouse in North London just as their album, Waiting For The Sun, races to No.1. The gig is captured on film by Granada TV.
8 – The Beatles perform Hey Jude on David Frost’s Frost On Sunday programme. It will soon race to No.1 and, clocking in at 7 minutes 10 seconds, will break the record for the longest chart-topper ever.
9 – Following the violence in August, Chicago's Mayor Daley famously states: "The policeman isn't there to create disorder, the policeman is there to preserve disorder."
11 – Sly & The Family Stone arrive in London for a UK tour. At the airport bassist Larry Graham’s bags are searched and a quantity of cannabis is discovered. The BBC immediately cancels a scheduled TV experience and the band fly home without playing a single note.
14 – While on tour in Britain, Roy Orbison learns that two of his three sons have been killed in a fire at his Nashville home.
15 – NBC Television premieres their new show Soul! Lou Rawls and Martha & The Vandellas contribute to the first programme.
26 – The Stones’ Brian Jones is found guilty of unauthorised possession of cannabis. He is fined £50.
26 – Dusty Springfield travels to Memphis to begin recording her fifth studio album. Atlantic Record's hitmakers, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin will produce. The record is completed in less than week. On its release in January 1969, it will be heralded as a bona-fide soul classic.
28 – Dewey Philips, the first DJ to play Elvis Presley on the radio, dies.
