(Fantasy, 1975)
Wonderful collision between the speccy, smacky genius of the 88 and Mr Smooth. Who knew?
I found this record in my local Melbourne Salvation Army store a couple of years back. After parting with the princely sum of one Australian dollar I took it home and stuck it on my turntable, unsure what to expect from the initially unlikely pairing of these differing musical giants. What came out of my speakers was what heaven must sound like on a Sunday morning. The connection between Bennett's powerful, emotional voice, and Evans' intricate and melodic piano accompaniment is instantly awe-inspiring, as they challenge and push each other to some transcendent musical moments. In the hands of lesser artists, Young And Foolish, Some Other Time and Days Of Wine and Roses generally come out sounding like hackneyed bar-room standards. Yet Bennett and Evans imbue every track with such stately elegance and heartfelt beauty that the listener is left spellbound, no longer wondering how Lady Luck got these two men together in a studio, just exceptionally grateful that she did. This album transcends the simple moniker of a “jazz album”. It is music in its purest and most eternal form, from two geniuses who in the early ’70s were perhaps risking a fair bit to make what was clearly a labour of love. What they produced will last forever.

The interaction between Bennett and Evans is incredible. Definitive covers of "Some Other Time", "The Touch of Your Lips", "We'll Be Together Again" and, over ll, "My Foolish Heart". Absolutely essential
