Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious

Aural bloodbath by grindcore’s übermensch causes MOJO messageboarder to lose lunch.
A writhing, bludgeoning album, Necroticism... is a masterpiece in brutality. Having delivered (then decimated) blistering grindcore, Carcass next brought together thrash, grind, and death metal in unholy communion. The result was arguably the finest metal album of the ’90s. Lyricist Jeff Walker reins in his fascination with graphic medical jargon slightly here but it’s still not one to play when your gran’s around (“Despumation the midden, the desipient I segment” indeed). Adding a second guitarist in Michael Amott helped free ex-Napalm Death plank-spanker Bill Steer, who peels off gut-wrenching solos from the very depths of his digestive tract. Riffs vomit themselves forth, seemingly played backwards and sideways and upside-down, both guitarists hacking their fingers to the bone in order to deliver yet more bars of bloodthirsty shred. Like dive-bombing in acid, Necroticism… hits hard then proceeds to melt away your flesh, while your speakers constantly threaten to burst in an explosion of gore and dismembered sinew, courtesy of Colin Richardson’s rib-crushing production. Extreme metal doesn’t come much more bloodily satisfying as this.
