Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters

At the start of January, we recommended Howard Tate. Here’s the man who tipped off producer/songwriter Jerry Ragovoy about HT, his former fellow Gainor Garnet Mimms. With a rangey high tenor fluting effectively and often into falsetto and steady supply of excellent material courtesy of Ragovoy and Bert Berns, Mimms shot to fame with the title track of his first album, a US R&B Number 1. It‘s one of those effective songs that starts with its chorus, Mimms’ performance oozing confidence and bravado as he takes back his roving, tearful lover after she’s been discarded by another. The way the soul singer stokes up the heat with each successive chorus makes a rich contrast with the careful modulation of his singing of the verses. Other stand-outs are a fine remake of the Impressions hit For Your Precious Love and, very particularly, A Quiet Place, wonderfully reflective with deep shades of Leiber & Stoller’s productions on The Drifters and Ben E King. So Close is a punchy dancer but it’s ballads that draw out Mimms’ best, as on Baby Don’t You Weep and Cry To Me (women did a lot of sobbing around Garnet).

  • ABOUT BLOODY TIME Garnet, this MARVELOUS singer, got some recognition. For over 20 years I've treasured his precious original vinyl releases & welcome remastered CD reissues. His vocal control & phrasing, shorn of modern studio wizardry, is 2nd-to-none, never being guilty of the tasteless, unnecessary aural gymnastics of fellow contemporaries such as Aretha, &, to a lesser extent, Otis. Coupled with Garnet's beautiful tones the exquisitely written/arranged/produced soul songs combine for an essential listening experience for anyone interested in great music of any genre.
Favourite Tracks: 'I'll Take Good Care Of You' - STUNNING, gospel-esque, building to an astonishing climax.
'A Quiet Place' - deceptively simple, hauntingly heartfelt.
'My Baby' - Ohhhh, my! Janis Joplin covered this, but, given the strength of the performance from Garnet & the musicians, she never had a chance. Sublime.
Recommended: any of his 60's output.
Now, let's talk about Bettye Swann while we're at it........
