(One Little Indian, 1991)
Ever wondered where Interpol and Editors got their sound? Wonder no more…
This week is Indie Week on MOJO, and every Disc Of The Day will reflect that theme.
With “indie” about to take a left turn down the drug dealers and thence to the disco, KOD picked the wrong moment to perfect their alliance of oceanic guitar sturm with the drang of Patrick Fitzgerald’s half-sobbed, half-declaimed stories of passion and grief. In 1989 Bob Mould was way in the closet and gay men didn’t rock like this, let alone sing about “likely orchards and vacant lots / big men grinning and holding hands”. Fitzgerald and co. had met at a Burning Spear show in 1987 and turned heads with ’89’s Love Is Hell album, but this is the sound of a band in the zone – harder and more propulsive than the soon-come “shoegazing” bands who would steal their FX-box thunder. Shortly they would predict the Death Of Cool, but this was Quixotic, and prevailing trends did for them instead. And yet, every time the ascending swirls of Editors’ Bullets or the bereaved baritone of Interpol’s Paul Banks are heard in “indie” discos up and down the land, there’s a lonesome echo of KOD.

BY FAR one of the most prolific and emotional bands to grace the the "music scene" as it were. And it's true, at the time of it's release, there weren't but a handful of lyricists that could bring emotion to the level that Patrick did (and continues to do, actually). Years ago, (and this tells you how old I am) I had the pleasure of seeing KOD play. It was just as one'd expect..... beautiful.
You must pick this up, you must sit down for a listen, and you will find yourself awash the waves of gorgeous love.
