VINICIUS CANTUARIA is so steeped in the classic musics of his Brazilian homeland, it’s a wonder he manages to be such an innovator. Manaus-born and (bizarrely) a fan of Fulham FC, he grew up as a percussionist, playing Indian and Portuguese music before catching the pop bug.
“I joined a rock band at school,” he tells David Hutcheon in the latest issue of MOJO magazine. “There were Brazilian elements, of course, but we wanted to be more like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.”
The school band, O Terço, became one of the most influential prog groups of Brazilian rock’s golden era, after which Cantuária spent eight years as Caetano Veloso’s percussionist. He went solo in 1983 and explored electronic music in New York in the ’90s, returning to inspire a new wave of Sao Paolo musicians such as Bebel Gilberto.
With his latest album, Cymbals, he celebrates the 50 years of bossa nova with electric guitars and feedback, plus able assistance from Tom Waits collaborator Marc Ribot and pianist Brad Mehldau.
Having said that, fans of bossa nova’s familiar soothing gentleness need not run for the hills (“I just try to do the pure bossa nova,” he insists). Check out three of Cymbals’ highlights below...
Galope
A slinky Bossa Nova where the flamenco-voiced Vinicius laments his suffering/ icy/ reckless/ noble heart. Marc Ribot lends acoustic guitar.
Chuva
Levitating haiku to the sun and the rain, with the debonair singer in sweetly hypnotic mood; even the feedbacking electric guitar sounds like heat haze.
Prantos
With surroundings graceful and sombre, and a mournful cello mirroring his woe, our lonesome singer is so sad he could die.

I also recommend Cantuaria's 2001 album, titled simply "Vinicius". Beautiful music.
