There is life after Horses, insists MOJO messageboarder, rightly.

Patti Smith Group

The received wisdom is that Patti Smith produced one of the most brutal, visceral debut records ever and her career thereafter has been one of diminishing returns. When the author Joseph Heller was accused by a journalist of never having written anything as good as Catch 22, he said, “Yeah, but neither has anyone else.” Patti Smith could use the same argument. Put Horses to one side, and her body of work takes on a different sheen. In particular, her fourth record, Wave has often been dismissed as over-produced, and lacking bite, but, in truth, it’s her most underrated album, exalted by the sheer quality of the songs. Her tribute to husband-to-be Fred Smith, Frederick, is possibly her finest ever pop tune; Dancing Barefoot is as good as anything else she has recorded, while So You Wanna Be A Rock’N’Roll Star? would have been the stand-out cut on her recent covers album. It is time this record emerged from out of Horses shadow.
