Coquettish, Cobain-approved Scottish duo’s vicarious thrills anthologised!
This week is Indie Week on MOJO, and every Disc Of The Day will reflect that theme.
While sexual candour has rarely been the preserve of emotionally sensitive indie types, The Vaselines’ sense of brazen mischief is exemplified by their very name. Drawing on both The Velvet Underground’s rhythmic down-stroke and lustful subject matter, Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee’s debut EP, Son Of A Gun, marked not only their first time in the studio, but also confirmed the duo’s salacious intent, most notably on Rory Ride Me Raw and their lo-fi re-make of Divine’s hi-energy anthem You Think You’re A Man. “We were camp and pretended to be sleazy, and we were very drunk,” the band later commented of their early studio venture. Their second EP, 1988’s Dying For It, however, is the highlight of both this 19-track anthology and The Vaselines’ career generally, most notably due to Molly’s Lips (its languorous intent punctured by a de-tuned bicycle horn) and the self-flagellating melodrama of Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam – both of which were covered by Nirvana. The inclusion here of the band’s sole album, 1989’s Dum-Dum, sees the duo adding a rhythm section in an unnecessary quest for musical legitimacy. A point not lost on Kelly and McKee who split just weeks after Dum-Dum’s release on Rough Trade.
