1968: The Year That Rocked The World!

In the annals of rock history, there has never been a year quite like 1968. Political assassinations, counter-cultural uprisings, student demonstrations and racial tensions all played their part in bleeding the colour from the hippie dreams of the previous 12 months. The prospect of revolution filled the air and young people took to the streets in their thousands.

With the brutal realities of the Vietnam War beamed into homes around the world on a daily basis, some of the decade’s most prominent musicians and artists began joining the masses in their battle against the establishment.

In this month’s issue of MOJO we track the turbulent ride of one such band through their most incendiary year at the vanguard of the movement. To accompany our mammoth Rolling Stones feature, we’ve put together a month-by-month interactive timeline that plots the course of what writer Mark Kurlansky called “the year that rocked the world”. And with classic releases from the likes of The Beatles, the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Band, Van Morrison, Small Faces, Johnny Cash, The Kinks, The Byrds, Etta James and The Velvet Underground, it's easy to see why 1968 has such a formidable reputation.

Behind each red link you’ll find images, biographical information, video clips and audio files that we hope will enhance your riotous ride from January to December.

So, what are you waiting for? To quote the Yippie manifesto, “Rise up and abandon the creeping meatball”!

1968 STARTS HERE!
