THE MOJO POST bag has already been sundered with praise for this month’s covermount CD, The New Dictionary Of Blues & Soul. Reflecting a renaissance in old-school soul, blues and R&B stylings on both sides of the Atlantic, it draws together the best contemporary purveyors of same, from Nicole Willis, Edgar Jones, Eli Reed, James Hunter, The Black Keys, Seasick Steve, Sharon Jones and more.
So overwhelmed by choice were we, that we had to leave three brilliant tracks off the final CD. But thanks to the glorious wonder of the interweb, you can hear them online instead. Click below to listen and learn.
1. Ian Siegal – Revelator
A voice like hell’s bullfrog, and lightning-strike bottleneck guitar to give Elmore James the willies, Englishman Siegal delivers a moody take on the apostle John’s apocalyptic vision. Blues like (Big) Mama (Thornton) used to make. It’s from Siegal’s latest album Meat And Potatoes on Nugene Records.
More of him at www.myspace.com/iansiegal.
2. The Budos Band – Ghost Walk
Starting like one of the Meters’ many odes to perambulatory gaits (Cissy Strut, Chicken Strut etc.) Ghost Walk sends shivers down the spine with its slinky update of the soul instrumental. Bongos go bananas, Thomas Brenneck’s guitar scratches itchily, while the rump of this Staten Island collective give over to the groove. It’s toasted! And it’s on their self-titled album on Daptone.

3. Congregation – Dose Of Hell
Bewitched, benumbed and bewildered, New Cross bedsit diva Victoria Yeulet’s got a problem. No-one “does” her like you could, but you were bad to the bone, like Stag-O-Lee and Blake Fielder-Civil combined. Meanwhile, Ben Prosser’s twangsome guitar smokes like a stubbed-out Gauloise. Voilà! A gouched-out Fever for the late-oughties. A nouveau classic from their debut album, released on Bronzerat, April 14.
