Tasty country-funk excellence from the lost man of the bluegrass state…
In 1969, Kentucky’s Jim Ford released what would become his only completed album. Harlan County was an amped-up, mid-western masterpiece that combined southern soul, hillbilly rock’n’roll and country-funk to create a unique, groove-heavy hybrid. Bobby Womack and Aretha Franklin quickly became fans, but, despite sessions with the likes of Sly Stone, his debut LP would remain his solitary solo release. Luckily, following a lengthy battle with drugs, the reclusive Ford was tracked down to a trailer in California and 38 years after Harlan County’s original appearance, the album finally found its way onto wide-release CD. Considering the company Ford used to keep, it’s unsurprising to find that the extra 15 tracks included on this collection are all equally exquisite. Jim Keltner, James Burton and Dr John are just a few of the musical luminaries who are reported to have played and recorded with the guy Stone dubbed “the funkiest white man I know”. A one-off Ford show with long-term fan Nick Lowe was scheduled to take place in May of this year. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Jim Ford died at his home on November 18, 2007.

Harlan county is an overlooked masterpiece of country-soul. In the league of Dan Penn, Joe South, T. J. White or K. Kristofferson, Ford is a true soulful singer. A delight..
