NEWS DIGEST: Monday, March 3

Mike Smith, the lead singer and keyboardist of '60s British popsters, The Dave Clark Five, died last week at the age of 64. He had been suffering from pneumonia following a 2003 spinal cord injury which had left him paralysed from the waist down.

The Dave Clark Five hit the number 1 spot in January 1964 with Glad All Over. They had a further 19 UK top forty hits and considerable success in the States before disbanding in 1970. They left behind them 23 albums and sales of over 100 million. The band will be inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York on March 10.

The Rutles will reunite for a one-off 30th anniversary show in Los Angeles on March 17.
Eric Idle, Neil Innes, Ricky Fataar and John Halsey, otherwise known as Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry, will also attend a Q&A and screening of the digitally remastered All You Need Is Cash at the Egyptian Theater. The main feature will be accompanied by rare footage from Saturday Night Live and 2003's Rutles 2: Can't buy Me Lunch.

Nine Inch Nails have released a new four volume, 36-track instrumental collection called Ghosts I-IV, via www.NIN.com. Trent Reznor revealed, “It’s the result of working from a visual perspective – coating imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams”. The album is available on cd, vinyl and as a download.

  • Sad to hear about Mike - great singer and composer.
The DC5 are a shamefully ignored band, no doubt due to the catalogue being unavailable.
