The Church
Heyday

Don’t fear the mullets; they were something greater than the Australian R.E.M., says MOJO messageboarder.

The Church

Viewed in the shadow cast by its immediate successor, the international-breakthrough-of-sorts that was Starfish, it’s tempting to see Heyday as a developmental stepping-stone for The Church as they forged towards bigger things. And yet Heyday oozes magnificence in its own right. Disenchanted and Tristesse are deliciously dreamy slices of guitar pop. Columbus and Tantalized rock with bells and horns, wonderfully captured by producer Peter Walsh. The Eastern-flavoured instrumental Happy Hunting Ground is simply captivating, laying the ground for the soaring strings and lush arrangements of Roman and The View. Steve Kilby’s vocals are exquisite throughout, by turns strident and sugar-sweet, and his lyrics, particularly on Already Yesterday (“Mechanical bird of prey sing for your emperor”, indeed!), daringly Byzantine. A compelling document, from a band at their peak.

  • What a great choice; it is a truly magnificent album from the world's best largely undiscovered band.
