FIRST – INEVITABLY – it was The Beatles, submerging their identities in a fictional group called Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Then it was Garth Brooks, entering his mid-career crisis and exiting it as a fictional rock star (with preposterous goatee) called Chris Gaines. More recently still, it was Dave Stewart, parking the persona and re-emerging as Platinum Weird, an invented glam rock band from a mythical 1974.
Now it’s Chris Rea’s turn to undergo an eccentric transmogrification, as the Teesside guitar maestro tours under the guise of not one but two new and different musical creations. “Support act” The Delmonts are a fictional early-’60s beat combo, with Rea’s guitar twanging like Hank Marvin on steroids. After the intermission, it’s The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes – the “same” band revived a decade later, now steeped in a more familiar Rea enthusiasm: the blues.

Turning his alter egos into 360-degree “product”, Rea’s current release is a double CD, double vinyl, plus book collection which tells the fake group’s mythical tale from their late-’50s inception to the present day. Rea, whose life was threatened by pancreatitis in the early oughties, and whose last release, 05’s Blue Guitars, was an 11 (count ‘em) CD review of blues guitar styles from their West African roots onwards, appears to have come through a period of crisis resolved never again to do anything by halves.
Meanwhile, you can bask in The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes’ lovingly recreated retro vibe with this Steepletone Dansette-style record player. Just mail Editor@mojo4music.com with the correct answer to the following question and you’re in with a chance.
The question: which girls did Chris Rea sing about in 1985?
a) Middlesbrough Girls
b) American Girls
c) Stainsby Girls
