MOJO Honours List: Shortlist Announced!

AS OF MIDNIGHT, the voting for the 2008 MOJO Honours List entered a new phase, with the publication of a star-studded, quality-rich list of nominees.

Arctic MonkeysAlex Turner finds himself recognised in four categories, with Best Album and Best Live Act namechecks for his bread-and-butter band and Breakthrough Act and Best Song nominations for his velveteen orch-pop incarnation, The Last Shadow Puppets.

Welsh soulstress Duffy and MOJO Honours List perennials Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds both score a pair of nominations apiece, while there’s a surprise late surge from Wisconsin-based indie folk-rock act Bon Iver, whose exquisite debut album For Emma, Forever Ago is causing such a stir amongst MOJO’s audience of sonic savants.

Elsewhere, there’s recognition for The Very Best Of Ethiopiques – an amazing compilation culled from 23 volumes of unearthed Ethiopian grooves, the world music sensation of 2007 – and Led Zeppelin, whose astonishing gig at the O2 Arena in December continues to reverberate amongst music fans.

Renewed voting on the shortlists will continue online here at MOJO4music.com until May 28. The results in these, and a bevy of Merit Categories, will be revealed at the MOJO Honours List ceremony on June 16.

  • As good as Led Zep's reunion was, I don't think it's fair that one gig should qualify someone for a "Live Act" award.

    Go Nick!

  • i was at the o2 arena to see led zeppelin performance. in my opinion, their career talks about their talent and yes, one gig of that kind is enough to get an award. i've listened to such a passion and music that night, something unforgettable for me and for the music world, in my opinion, but it's only my opinion !
    cheers .

  • Let it be clear, I'm a big Cave fan, but did'nt he wrote once:

"AVING SAID THAT, I FEEL THAT IT'S NECESSARY FOR ME TO REQUEST THAT MY NOMINATION FOR BEST MALE ARTIST BE WITHDRAWN AND FURTHERMORE ANY AWARDS OR NOMINATIONS FOR SUCH AWARDS THAT MAY ARISE IN LATER YEARS BE PRESENTED TO THOSE WHO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH THE COMPETITIVE NATURE OF THESE AWARD CEREMONIES. I MYSELF, DO NOT. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN OF THE OPINION THAT MY MUSIC IS UNIQUE AND INDIVIDUAL AND EXISTS BEYOND THE REALMS INHABITED BY THOSE WHO WOULD REDUCE THINGS TO MERE MEASURING. I AM IN COMPETITION WITH NO-ONE.
MY RELATIONSHIP WITH MY MUSE IS A DELICATE ONE AT THE BEST OF TIMES AND I FEEL THAT IT IS MY DUTY TO PROTECT HER FROM INFLUENCES THAT MAY OFFEND HER FRAGILE NATURE."?

    No sweat ;°)

I was there also and it was the most AWESOME concert that I've ever had the privilege to attended
Led Zeppelin most definitely deserves that distinct honor for their performance at the O2 12/10/07

  • Have read some interesting comments. That said having just watched Nick & Co on Jools Holland have to say he's a brill performer with his band. I've never felt compeled to comment on websites but after tonight I had to see what was said and I feel its good overall. Nick - you get my vote. Why are you not performing around Sheffield? Keep rocking for us 'oldies'. If ever you need a sweeper upper I'll volunteer!!!
    Keep rockin.

  • Nick Cave has more tallent in one finger that the whole lot of the others. Mr Cave could sing the telephone directory and make it sound like a masterpiece.
But he is too cool for recieving back slapping awards. Give them to him anyway so that he can write a witty letter of refusal in accepting the awards.

  • Nick Cave without a doubt!!! Nick Cave ALL THE WAY!!! Yes he did write the MTV letter but it's not the point. He should be recognised for his incredible contribution to music. Pity to see him not on the live act list, how the hell did that happen?

I wish Nick lived in Oz. Nick Cave forever.

    To Stagger Lee:

I agree absolutely! I've benn have the success, to see him also in Prague, Wienna and Budapest. But not this album. I'm so happy, he didn't give up and returned to the power of beginning this whole thing! I wish I could have been there there on this tour of Him. I love and admire him. And prefer his letter to MTV.
