NEWS DIGEST: Friday, June 13

Beck has revealed some tasty titbits of info on his latest album Modern Guilt, due for release on July 7. The album was produced by Danger Mouse, clearly still in a rock ‘n’ roll state of mind after producing the last Black Keys album. The first single from the album, entitled Chemtrails, will be on the shelves from June 23.

The track list is as follows:

Orphans
Gamma Ray
Chemtrails
Modern Guilt
Youthless
Walls
Replica
Soul Of A Man
Profanity Prayers
Volcano

The Cure today released a brand new single, the second from their as-yet-untitled studio album, due on September 13. The track’s called Freakshow, and the release includes B-side All Kinds Of Stuff. The band plans to put out a new single on the 13th of every month until the album comes out in September. The spooky sods. Watch this space for details on the next two singles.

Metallica have apologised to fans and various web portals after their management ordered online music sites to take down reviews of their unfinished, untitled new record. Journos were invited to listen to rough takes of six songs from the album on June 3, but when the inevitable reactions were posted, management kicked up a fuss and told many sites to remove the content. According to a statement released by Metallica on their website, this was done whilst the band was away on tour in Europe. To make amends, links to some of the reviews have been posted on the website, along with the promise that their management have been subjected to “a few rounds of managerial ear spank”. Ouch.

After yesterday’s news of the James Brown public sale, another priceless rock artifact is due to hit the auction block. The latest item to go under the hammer is the 1965 Fender Strat Jimi Hendrix set fire to at his famous London Astoria gig on March 31, 1967. The guitar has been kept in storage for the past 40 years, and is expected to fetch around £250,000. The auction is due to take place sometime this summer.

And finally…Today in 1975, John Lennon made his last ever TV appearance. He appeared on Salute To Sir Lew Grade, performing Slippin’ And Slidin’ and Imagine.
