NEWS DIGEST: Thursday, June 12

My Bloody Valentine’s much-anticipated live return at the London Roundhouse on June 20 has been usurped as the band’s official first reunion show. The crafty devils have added two warm-up shows on June 13 and 14 at London’s comparatively tiny Institute of Contemporary Arts. Don’t bother trying to get tickets, either, as the shows are already sold out.

Remastered reissues of Loveless and Isn’t Anything are due for release on June 23.

American fans got a teasing glimpse of a reunited White Stripes onstage at a recent Raconteurs gig in Denver. During the band’s encore, Meg White stepped on to the stage and sat behind the drum kit, prompting borderline hysteria from the crowd. Crushingly, she only tapped the skins a couple of times and left as The Raconteurs continued their set. It’s the first time the Stripes have shared a stage since Meg’s “acute anxiety” forced the duo to abandon their autumn tour. Still, fans can console themselves with news that the band is in the midst of working on their seventh studio album.

Former Suede frontman Brett Anderson has announced that his new solo album, entitled Wilderness, will be released later this year. Anderson plays piano and guitar on the album, alongside cello by Amy Langley. Emmanuelle Seigner also provides guest vocals on a track called A Different Place. Fans who attend Anderson’s at the Mermaid Theatre in London on July 7 will receive a special treat – a copy of the new album on USB stick format.

For reasons as yet unclear, Prince has cancelled what was being billed as his “last ever performance in Ireland”. The show was scheduled to take place at Croke Park in Dublin on Monday, June 16. Over 55,000 ticket holders will be massively disappointed by the news. A bulletin on the MCD Productions website gives no reasons for the cancellation, other than describing them as “beyond the control of Prince and MCD Productions”. The site advises ticket holders that they can seek refunds from the point of purchase from Friday, June 13.

And finally…Today in 1982, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Linda Rondstadt and Gary “US” Bonds all played at a rally for nuclear disarmament, making for an evening 450,000 fans in Central Park would never forget.
