Julia
Lennon's dead mother [and Yoko "Ocean Child" Ono] hymned with a forsaken, tundra beauty.
Steve Drozd (The Flaming Lips): "I first heard Julia on an eight-track tape player in my older brother's Chrysler Cordoba. The interior was red velvet, it smelled like pot. My brother, James, would go to K Mart and buy a shitload of eight-tracks for 50 cents apiece. 50 cents for 'the white album'? Bargain!
"I still think this song is way ahead of its time. Even though it is just a couple of acoustic guitars and Lennon singing, there is just something about it... It has that longing in the melody line - you feel that he is never going to grasp this thing he is reaching out for. And it's a very interesting chord progression, a weird chromatic thing when he sings, 'ocean child...' A guy sitting around strumming guitar just wouldn't do that. Lennon was unique like that. He would do those weird things that fell from his psyche, fully formed. Across The Universe was about universal love, but here Lennon is just crying out to his mother. It's beautiful."
