Yer Blues

Nasty, poisoned blues lurching bloody-mindedly towards death. Dig Lennon's two-note solo!

Peter Case (Plimsouls' beat-punk nabob): "I was 15 years old, still living with my parents in Hamburg, New York, in a painful state of total alienation that I was afraid I wasn't coming down from. My band at the time was called Pig Nation. We played superloud, distorted three-chord rock'n'roll: songs like Chuck Berry's Schooldays, Link Wray's Rumble... My favourite song in our repertoire was Yer Blues. I'd loved it when I first heard it around Christmas '68 and over the next year it had become very real to me.

"I've never bought the idea that the song was a spoof of British blues, it sounds dead serious. 'I am of the Universe and you know what it's worth!'... 'The worm he licks my bone!... I feel so suicidal just like Dylan's Mr Jones': this put Lennon in the class with Dylan's 'we all sit here stranded, doing our best to deny it', psychedelic rock'n'roll survival literature of the first order.

"Pig Nation rehearsed in the basement of my parents' house. My dad would be off at work, but my poor mother would be upstairs with this incredibly intense, screaming rock'n'roll rising through the floorboards for hours on end. Once we were on a break, and she called down the stairs: 'Boys, why don't you play that nice song about suicide one more time!'
