Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
The teachings of the Maharishi, Lennon’s skag habit or the sin of Onan? You decide.
Dave McCabe (The Zutons): “I love it. The title for one is fucking stonking. I remember getting The White Album, which is my favourite album, and looking at that title thinking, Right, that’s gonna be one of those songs, and it was. The thing I like most about it is that bell, that bell that goes on right the way through the song and you don’t even know it’s there but you do. It stops in the middle and what do they all say? ‘C’mon, c’mon, c’mon’, babbling in tongues… It’s just got mad moves that you’re not expecting but that really work well together.
“And that *bell… Is it really a bell? Could it be a triangle? Or a cymbal? Whatever it is, Ringo’s twatting hell out of it and it sounds amazing. Like The Beatles are telling you to WAAAKE UUUP! Then there’s the bass: it’s like Otis Redding or James Brown. Every time you listen to it you have a new favourite bit and whenever we play it in a DJ set it jumps out, like it’s on a frequency that no other music is on.
“What’s it about? It’s about having a wank! And Lennon’s open about it. ‘Your inside is out and your outside is in’ – that to me says he’s ejaculatin’. He’s having a wank and he doesn’t mind talking about it. It’s a sexy song – a wank is what he wants and he’s saying it in a completely honest but a dead twisted way.”
