Track: Dear Prudence
Artist: Lau
MOJO says: Winners of the Best Group award at the BBC2 Folk Awards, Lau consist of three of Scottish post-trad firebrands – that’s Kris Drever (vocals, guitar), Martin Green (piano, accordion) and Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle). Their take on John Lennon’s one-take wonder maintains the slow, brooding D major cadence of the original while emphasizing its deep sense of acoustic reverie.

well, at least it's slightly better than the cover of 'Back in the USSR'...... slightly.

You might have noticed on the first track I also put this song down. If I didn't...well, I did everywhere else. My memory's not the best right now.
It's not because it's a bad cover. It's a decent cover. Unfortunately, that's it.
The Main Problem: It's missing the dynamic quality of the original song.
How so? Lau starts out great on the guitar part and vocals, but then it comes to "the sun is up" the electric comes in, and he drags the words as if it were the end of the song. The vocal harmonies then follow.
Because Lau reaches the high so early ("Won't you open up your eyes?"), it feels somewhat flat. Even on look around, it doesn't feel like I'm lifting but rather I'm being sustained on a level ground by a heavy sound. No uplift occurs in this song except the beginning.
I would have liked to see them better incorperate the fiddle.
Also, they're not at any sort of high at the end that they can descend from.
I'd also like to add that it doesn't matter whether or not the track sounds similar to the orignal. A song can resemble the original but be so well enhanced it retains its own identity. If you go a wonderful new way, then bravo to you, but I don't think there's anything wrong with doing a cover similar to the original.
