Dear Prudence
A circling guitar gives birth to Lennon’s divine offer of solace.
Donovan: “Being in Rishikesh in February ’68 with John was like being art students again or young musicians. At the height of our fame, we’d kind of isolated ourselves. And relieved of super-fame, we found it exhilarating sitting around with just acoustic guitars again and just playing. John showed a lot of interest in the Carter Family finger style I was using, and over two days, I taught him, and he immediately starting writing in this new style. Out of it came Julia – that beautiful song about his mother – and Dear Prudence.
“In the ashram with us was Mia Farrow, the actress, and her sister Prudence. Now Prudence was a little bit traumatised, and who isn’t in this world? But she was in particular difficulties and she was in a deep meditation. You see, we were diving deep inside ourselves, not just for 20 minutes in the morning and the evening, but we had days of it. And half days, full days, sometimes three days, very deep deep, deep exploration of the deep psyche. We were stirring up deep dark parts of us, and the discoveries – not all good – were reflected in The White Album and my Hurdy Gurdy Man album. So Prudence was in deep, and this was John’s way of saying Are you OK in there?, and of course it has that quality of soothing but also a sense of disquiet. I know John intimated as much, but he was going through a lot – leaving Cynthia and his secret lover was Yoko already. There was a lot of jealousy from friends of John. But John said later in the ’70s, that he was wrong, that he was imagining a lot of things. Me, in meditation with the Maharishi he never once asked me to take off my bra…”
