Mother Nature's Son
Acoustic Macca draws a parallel with Nat King Cole’s Nature Boy.
Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub): “When I was 16 my then girlfriend bought the White Album for me as a Christmas present, and frankly I could have picked any of the McCartney songs off it. There’s a deftness and lightness of touch in his guitar playing here – that picking style is really his own thing. It’s Macca on the kit too, very distinctive. He sounds like he’s playing the drums with his hands, no sticks.
“It’s very difficult to pull off this kind of simplicity - the way the guitar moves and swings - but I get the impression McCartney routines a song like this for hours and hours when he’s writing it, ‘cos he’s playing it so well. I could never play a song like this, or Blackbird, with all those string slaps and so on.
“There’s something kind of introspective about Mother Nature’s Son too, not so much with the lyric but something to do with its sound and the way it’s sung that’s quite hard to explain. I Will is more of a straightforward love song but this is quite melancholic, it somehow feels more personal. It’s like he’s sitting there, stoned in the sticks, reflecting on his last 8 years.”
