NEWS DIGEST: Wednesday, July 16

The Fender Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix famously burned at London’s Astoria in 1967 is set to go under the hammer at an auction on September 4.

The guitar, which is thought to be the first that Hendrix burned live and was found last year at bass player Noel Redding’s house, is expected to fetch £500,000 ($1 million).

Hendrix incinerated his guitar on two other occasions: at Monterey in June, 1967 and again at Miami Pop in May of the following year, but the Astoria Fender is the only one to have survived.

The auction is scheduled to take place at the Idea Generation Gallery with several other rock rarities up for grabs. A book of Jim Morrison’s poetry and lyrical musings from 1971 is expected to go for £100,000, while late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's five-piece Ludwig kit is expected to fly out the door for £20,000.

  • The only "burnt" Hendrix guitar to have survivved? The guitar Hendrix burned at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967 is on display at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. I visited there from Vancouver 2 years ago and it's a must-see for Hendrix fans.
