Track: Back In The U.S.S.R.
Artist: Liz Green
MOJO says: One of the stars in MOJO’s Mid-Term Report 2008, Wirral-born Liz Green recalls growing up singing to Back In The USSR on long car journeys. Here Britain’s cracked blues maven delivers a fittingly adventurous take on the album opener that saw The Beatles themselves head into uncharted territory. “I think of it like the sound of a ‘50s musical crossed with an old colliery band,” she explains. “It's quite camp but really fun!”

I know many artists want to put their personality into a cover song and make it their own, but from the 30 seconds I've heard, this interpretation of "Back in the U.S.S.R." doesn't sound too good.

kind of reminds me of a sort-of female Tiny Tim.
I'm sure someone is going to praise it

Got to say, the opening here sounds like your tribute to Revolver.
It's times like this I wish Roxy Music had recorded "Back in the U.S.S.R." I think it would have been perfect for them.
However, I want to assure the listening public this is NOT the entire album. Trust me, it starts getting really interesting around "Happiness is a Warm Gun." At least, that's how it worked for me. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" pretty much met my expectations, and Glass Onion had a cool little DUB moment going. Still, pretty much everything "Happiness" on is in the clear.
I really like the version of "Martha My Dear" you guys featured. It's kind of a cool McCartney cross between that and "She's Leaving Home." Also loved the "Blackbird" cover, which is great because I thought it would be just awful. Then again, I'm a sucker for covers in other languages. :")
If you want a track that stays true to the White Album atmosphere, listen to "Rocky Raccoon.
"Don't Pass Me By" is an interesting ride. One minute, you think it's a boring song, the next it takes you for a funk groove. Then you go into something that sounds more like "Don't Let Me Down." Not my favorite on the CD, but you'd be wise to heed the advice of the track.
Uh-oh. I better wrap this up. Anyway, I hope I've convinced you all there's a chest of wonder beyond this dud track.
Can't wait for Part II. ^_^

"What have you done with their bodies ?" you´ve thrown a bunch of relatively unknown musicians into the lion´s arena. Covering the White Album must be a hard task, but there they went !
result : a bland and featureless set of songs, many of the bands sounding too-wise for their own good (and ours, mind you). A couple of nice tries, but dispirited as a whole.

Come on boys! The girl who sings Back in USSR does well as does the kid on Rocky Racoon.
Not as good as the coasts though.

Most of the free cds that come with MOJO are crap. This one is no different. I use them for coasters.
As far as the "lost film" is concerned, it's a joke. If anyone believes that film is real I'd like to talk to you about some swampland I own.

RE: Dan
In case you didn't read the fine print, Dan, MOJO specifically said it was a joke. Thus the quotes around "lost."
Lighten up.
While I'm here, one of my favorite MOJO comps was The Quiet Revolution. I'm also quite fond of In My Room and that New Dictionary disc a few months back.
