Towards A One-Disc White Album!

6:00 AM GMT 28/07/2008

GEORGE MARTIN FAMOUSLY said The Beatles would have made an even better single album. We’ve resolved to test that idea – and there’s a prize (namely, a framed, original proof of MOJO’s White Album magazine cover) for what judges think is the best 15-tracker. Have a look at some of our efforts – and those of some of our favourite Beatle-obsessed artists – and have a go yourself in the comment area.

Your stand-in George Martins...

MOJO’s Danny Eccleston

MOJO’s Andrew Male

George Martin

MOJO's Keith Cameron

Charles Manson

MOJO's Jenny Bulley

List your own 15-trackers below (and send a copy here, with your contact details, if you’d like to enter the competition).

  • Single disc? I'd have gone for a triple disc set. I proposed such a set in rec.music.beatles.moderated back in November 2002 (you can google it) which would have had two records worth of conventional material and a third disc of freak out stuff to fry your mind. Kind of like the extra Apple Jam album that came with All Things Must Pass.

The basic premise was to use other tracks recorded in 1968 to add to the album. These would include:
It's All Too Much (OK , so it's from 1967)
    Hey Bulldog
Across The Universe (Anthology version or WWF version)
    Not Guilty
You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
    What's The New Mary Jane

I'm also requesting the 20 minute version of Helter Skelter be used, as well as a blended version of Revolution 1 and Revolution 9.

I'll leave Only A Northern Song and All Together Now for the Yellow Submarine EP that was scheduled but cancelled in favour of the soundtrack album. You can argue that It's All Too Much belongs here but then it's such a long song that you'd be pushing your sonic luck trying to put it on the same side as one of the other songs - one of which would have to be Yellow Submarine.

Here's the running order of the three disc set:

    Record One Side One
    Back In The USSR
    Dear Prudence
    Glass Onion
    ObLaDi ObLaDa
    Wild Honey Pie
    Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    Happiness Is A Warm Gun

    Record One Side Two
    Martha My Dear
    I'm So Tired
    Blackbird
    Piggies
    Rocky Raccoon
    Don't Pass Me By
Why Don't We Do It In The Road
    I Will
    Julia

    Record Two Side One
    Birthday
    Yer Blues
    Mother Nature's Son
    Everybody's Got Something To Hide...
    Sexy Sadie
    Hey Bulldog
    Long Long Long

    Record Two Side Two
    It's All Too Much
    Honey Pie
    Savoy Truffle
    Cry Baby Cry
    Not Guilty
    Across The Universe

    Record Three Side One
Can You Take Me Back Where I Came From?
    Helter Skelter (long version)
    What's The New Mary Jane
You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)

    Record Three Side Two:
    Revolution 1 through 9
    Goodnight

And just for fun, the third record would be on the Zapple label.
Of course, Good Night simply *has* to end the record.

  • RE: frederick.harrison@sympatico.ca I like the idea of a triple White Album but it shouldn't include any pre-India songs such as 'Bulldog' and 'Universe'. These belong in a different Beatle soundworld with all the Magical Mystery Tour stuff. My Triple would include Hey Jude, Revolution (b-side version), Sour Milk Sea (the Jackie Lomax version is a virtual Beatles/White Album track anyway), Junk, Not Guilty, Circles, Whats The New Mary Jane and Look At Me ( which I believe is from this era - it certainly fits soundwise). A bigger Doll's House to get lost in.

  • It's very funny because if you watch carefully the first 14 letters, you can find the 30 songs from the Beatles "White album".
In reality, there is no 30 masterpieces, but there are no bad songs.
And the interpretation of the Beatles is perfect.
(personally I don't count "Wild Honey Pie": for me, it's just a joke / this is proof that the Beatles have not tried to create a perfect album)
Another thing: in reality, all the songs of the "White Album" has covered by other artists or groups!
(excuse me for my basic English, i'm just a French boy)

  • Played with this idea years back and made two, one that is John-like and the other that is Paul-like, with two Harrisongs each and the Ringo offering on the Paul thing. The John thing is 15 songs, but the Paul thing is only 14 songs. The Paul tunes on the John thing are all hard rockers. The John songs on the Paul thing are all fun sing-a-long types. Meant to reflect the two different directions the two main songwriters were going, and their attempts to meet each other partway at this juncture.

  • Those triple albums further up naturally got me a little more than curious. The result: I made a two-CD rearrangement of the White Album. This actually works as an uninterrupted set, but for the sake of space that wouldn't happen. Anyway, enjoy:

    Disc 1

A Beginning (This went before Don't Pass Me By, but I feel it opens the album better)
    Back in the USSR
    Dear Prudence
The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    Happiness is a Warm Gun
    Martha My Dear
    I'm So Tired
    Blackbird
    Sexie Sadie (Anthology Version)
    Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (Anthology Version)
    Birthday
    Don't Pass Me By
    Rocky Raccoon
What's the New Mary Jane? (Anthology Version)
    Circles (Kinfauns)
Junk (Kinfauns or Anthology. I do Kinfauns because of the hiss consistancy)

    Disc 2

    Sour Milk Sea (Kinfauns)
    Everybody's Got Something to Hide...
    Not Guilty (Anthology Version)
    Honey Pie
    Mother Nature's Son
    Piggies
    Savoy Truffle
    Glass Onion
    Revolution 1
    Wild Honey Pie
Why Don't We Do It in the Road?
    I Will
    Julia
    Child of Nature
    Yer Blues
Teddy Boy (I find the Anthology version a bit out of place here, so I use the McCartney version. You can use the other one too.)
    Cry Baby Cry
    Helter Skelter
    Revolution 9
    Long, Long, Long
    Goodnight

I would have done a record, but the only reasonable break point I could think of here was the one I used to split the discs.

Anyway, I'd encourage you to put this together. You'd be suprised how well "everything flows."

(Edtior's Note: I didn't work it this way, but the last four songs are final statements from each Beatle. Cool how that worked out. ^_^ You can take it a sweet little bonus.)

I tried to use the typical UK Beatles album formula. George gets one song per side, Ringo gets one vocal performance, and there are 6 Paul Songs and 7 John songs (including "Goodnight").

    comments:
This was really hard in the end. I think you really find that the reason the White album works is ultimately because all the songs were left on it! Some songs were good because they were just 'great' songs even if they may have sounded a bit rough... and some were not as 'great' as it were, but were good recordings / had better sounding production / had good instrumentation, singing and playing etc. Hope you get what I mean. Paul McCartney once said 'What you're doin'' from 'Beatles for Sale' wasn't a 'great song' but it was a 'good recording'. I understood what he meant so I hope you get what I am saying here. Some songs were of course both 'great' songs and 'great recordings' of the song. 'Back in the USSR' has to open the white album. No doubt about it. Clever lyrics and the way they paraody Chuck and the Beach boys. 'Dear Prudence' is such a cool song in my mind - I've often seen it criticised in this debate about the white album but I think the guitar work is great (again to my mind) and I like the backing vocals and harmonies going on. 'Glass onion' - I like the 'stabbing' guitar work even though it becomes less prominent when the string parts come in - which I also happen to like. 'Obladi' is good and up-beat. I agree with that guy in the 'Revolution' book who said something like if you don't like the song because it's not supposed to be cool to like up-beat songs then there's something wrong with you. McCartney 's vocals are good I think on that one. Hapiness is a warm gun is definately one of the best songs altogether, if not the best. Three songs in one, excellent sound and brilliant backing vocals and harmony. Excellent lyrics too. While my guitar gently wheeps is a Harrison genious. Great piano intro by McCartney, great Macca harmonies as well and of course the Clapton solo. (Did I mention pretty much superb bass playing throughout the whole album - you can't deny it!) Martha my dear has soppy lyrics let's face it but I love the instruments and arrangement and sound, and the bit where it goes 'take a goood look around you.......' 'I'm so tired' - great Lennon Vocal. I like the Anthology version too. It's a good sounding recording. 'Blackbird' - speaks for itself - classic guitar part and good lyrics. 'Don't pass me by' - has that classic Ringo charm - no Beatle album complete without a Ringo song. I actually love that scrapy county fiddle going on and I like it because they purposely wanted it played rough and unprofessional sounding. 'Honey pie' is a good sounding recording and has that Lennon 'Wes Montgomery' Jazzy solo. 'Junk' to me ranks along side 'Blackbird' and 'Mother Nature's son' for the quality of the accoustic guitar. 'Why don't we do it in the road' is just cool for it's rawness and stripped down feel. And the sentiment - well....! Lennon raved about 'I want you' from Abbey road for the economy of it's lyrics rather than all the poetry and philosophy and stuff. 'Why don't we do it in the road' had already done it. 'Julia' has some more good accoustic guitar parts. I like the rawness again of 'Birthday' and I especially like the 'yes we're goin' to a party party' bit. (The Beatles were good at that 'climbing' thing in their songs) 'Mother Nature's son has nice accoustic parts. 'Everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey' is one of my favourites. I love the guitars and bass and all the riffing in the song and without doubt ringo's bell is fantastic! Sexy Sadie sounds a bit rough to me but I love the bits where it goes 'one sunny day the world was waiting for a lover.....and 'we gave you everything we owned just to sit at the table.....' 'Helter Skelter' is just so 'primal' and actually has some great backing vocals going on. I don't agree with all that rubbish and criticism that it was trying to be too heavy for the Beatles to pull off or that it was sub standard heavy metal or whatever. It wasn't even trying to be heavy metal. It's just a cool song. 'Long, long, long' can get a bit tedious and boring but it's one of those that I think is a good sounding recording. The bottle rattling on the piano at the end with the wailing is good. I like the 'hammondy organ' sound in 'Cry baby cry'. 'Good night' is overly lush but it's Ringo charm again. I actually like Ringo's voice for it's uniqueness. (I think the bit where they mix some of the orchestra from 'Goodnight' with Ringo's vocal for 'Octopusses garden' on the love album works really well.) Oh, and I forgot 'Yer Blues'. It's really rough sounding but that works to the songs advantage. (I don't know if I like the Rock'n'roll circus version better or not.) Well that's a whistle stop tour of my White album. The ecclectic mix is one of the things that makes the White album so interesting and it just stands out in it's content and style. It's nothing like Pepper and Mystery tour and it's nothing like Let it be and Abey road. Somehow it sits there like a bridge and just very unique.
PS I actually like 'wild honey pie' for it's freakiness, 'Piggies' is quite witty and the sound on Bungalow Bill I like but I just couldn't fit them on.

Oh - I've just has to reduce each side of my White album! I ain't goin back to edit me comments!! Just take off the slower songs or ones with poorer lyrics then.

  • Here's mine: I think this is much more of a representation of the themes, talents and iconic songs. Looking at the Manson insanity, I worked from how this album could have been released in 1968 and for history to remain the same. From a historic perspective you need Blackbird, Piggies, Helter Skelter and Revolution 9 otherwise history would be changed. Working from that perspective, I then created a track list that represents moody, bluesy feel to the album while trying to maintain a kind of flow and cohesivness that would have made it tighter while maintaining the spirit of the whole package. Give it a try:

    1. Happiness is a Warm Gun
    2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    3. Yer Blues
    4. Don't Pass Me By

  • To try and come up with the track listing for a one album version of 'The White Album' is nothing more than mental masturbation and akin to trying to figure out how best to "improve" a painting from one of the masters such as Renior or Dega - pointless on myriad levels.

The White Album is a classic in it's complete and true form - a two disc LP, bottom line, end of story, paragraph, period end of the bleeding story!

    Enough already!!

  • I know this is well over and most of you stopped reading at this point, but I managed to improve my White Album from the last CD I described. Enjoy:

    Disc 1:

    A Beginning

    Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (Anthology Version)
    (Break 1)
    Birthday
    Don't Pass Me By
    Rocky Raccoon
    What's the New Mary Jane?
    Circles (Kinfauns)
Hey Jude (I wish it were shorter)
    Junk (Kinfauns)

    Disc 2:

    Revolution (single)

    EGSTHEMAMM
    Not Guilty
    Honey Pie

Why Don't We Do It In the Road?
    I Will
    Julia
    (Break 2)
Step Inside Love (This was a full version I found on a chinese bootleg of Abbey Road. I don't think it's them, but it still blows me away)
    Child of Nature (Kinfauns)
    Yer Blues
Teddy Boy (McCartney, but feel free to use the Anthology)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Acoustic)
(I took a creative liberty and added the opening of the Anthology's Day in the Life for a sense of introduction.)
    Cry Baby Cry
    Helter Skelter
    Revolution 9
    Long Long Long
    Goodnight

  • Personally I think that the esteemed Mr Martin was talkin' out 'is arse cos the White Album is perfect as is. However, at gun point, I'd offer this as my 15-tracker :

    Side 1 :
    1 Back in the USSR
    2 Dear Prudence
    3 Glass Onion
4 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5 Happiness Is A Warm Gun
    6 Blackbird
    7 Don't Pass Me By
    8 I Will
    Side 2 :
    1 Birthday
    2 Mother Nature's Son
    3 Sexy Sadie
    4 Long Long Long
    5 Cry Baby Cry
    6 Revolution 9
    7 Goodnight
though I'm a bit miffed about having to leave out Don't Pass Me By & Yer Blues. Maybe it could be another double A sided single...

  • My White Album will be issued on vinyl, like in the good old days, and will have two sides. If I had to shrink this great record to one platter, I would give it 9 songs per side and it would probably look like this:

    Side 1

    1. Back in the U.S.S.R.
    2. Dear Prudence
    3. Glass Onion
    4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    5. Happiness is a Warm Gun
    6. Why Don’t We Do It In the Road
    7. Blackbird
    8. I Will
    9. Julia

    Side 2

    1. Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey
    2. Revolution #1
    3. Yer Blues
    4. Obla-Di-Obla-Da
    5. Sexy Sadie
    6. Martha My Dear
    7. Long Long Long
    8. Cry Baby Cry
    9. Helter Skelter

  • Coming very late to this party but in case anyone ends up reading this....

Side one. Generally upbeat or chilled side of the album (musically and lyrically). The "Mountain" side.

    1 Revolution (Single Ver) 03:24
    2 Birthday 02:42
    3 Martha My Dear 02:28
    4 I'm So Tired 02:03
    5 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 03:08
    6 Mother Nature's Son 02:48
    7 Back in the U.S.S.R. 02:43
    8 Dear Prudence 03:56

    Side one 23:12

Side two. Dark, dense the only respite on this side is "Blackbird" which bring it's veiled political lyrics. The "Valley" side.

    1 Yer Blues 04:01
2 While My Guitar Gently Weeps 04:45
    3 Long, Long, Long 03:04
    4 Happiness Is a Warm Gun 02:43
    5 Blackbird 02:18
    6 Glass Onion 02:17
    7 Helter Skelter 04:29

    Side two 23:37
    Whole Album 46:49

I think these represent the best of the songwriting that went into the album, you should never feel the need to have to skip any of these songs! The sequence has been carefully chosen so the album should flow really well, this was done in mind of the existing tracks of the album - so USSR/Prudence have to really follow because of the segue. I set out to pick two sides that would fit inside 24 minutes so it would have been possible with the LP mastering of '68, it just so happens that this ended up being 15 songs :-).

    Notes: -

    1. Using the Single version of Revolution, I agree with the other band members that Rev.1 was a bit slow, the single version really kicks off the album, letting you know they mean business. If you have a good enough source you may want to swap it for the TV performance with added "doo-wops" a la the album version. Part of a great one-two punch with Birthday.

    2. Paul's lighter moments: Martha - the piano part pulls me in with this one; Ob-La-Di - maybe john was sick of it, but I think Paul got there in the end, it gives the sound that they all enjoyed doong it regardless; MNS - probably my favourite of all the Beatle's Rishikesh acoustic songs.

    3. Side two: what can you say, just classic after classic. There is a great heavy sound on this side. Yer Blues opens the side maing you well aware things have changed in the time it took you to turn the LP over. George gets two songs on the album, one after the other, for no reason other than they just sounded best in that order. We end with Helter Skelter, it sure sounds like the end of the world, you need some time to recover after that.

    4. Almost made it: Sexy Sadie would have been on if we had the room, "Monkey" I was never a fan of but has grown on me, but neither quite made the grade.

5a. Cuts: Side one - is all here with the exception of "Bungalow Bill" which excluding Rev.9 has to be the weakest track of the whole album, I'm amazed that some people would have had it in their One-disc-er!
5b. Side two, start of with the first three but then - bam - six songs cut. Piggies is down there with "Bill" for me not sure why is so highly thought of, horrible lyrics, horrible sound; "Rocky" not bad but pastiches aren't going to make this album; "DPMB" not good enough but Ringo gets there eventually on Abbey Road; "WDWDIITR" good, but a double album only track really; "I Will" pretty melody but Paul has better on here; "Julia" another loved tack that I don't get, I find the playing average, the lyrics uninspired and the melody bland, sorry fans!

5c. Side three, another strong side. On here we have a couple cut in the middle, "Monkey" I've mentioned, it is a good recording, I think its arrangement needs improving (less verse, more "C'mon") and that bloody bell needs to be mixed down a little from "deafening", then I think you'll have a winner!; Sexy Sadie, one of my personal faves, just edged out for the good of the album.

5d. Side four, oops. It's cut. All of it. Revolution One gets on there as the single edit but that's it; Honey Pie see "Rocky"; Savoy Truffle see Piggies, at least this one is recorded better; "CBC" it's not a classic but I've always like it regardless; "Rev.9" biggest mistake they made releasing this, they have far more listenable indulgences on the cutting room floor. Good Night, if you strip away the orchestration there's not an awful lot left underneath, I've always found it rather underwhelming.

That was a lot of negativity so I'll finish with saying this one-disc version of the White Album is incredible listenable, with still an awful lot of variation it's very easy to stick "repeat" on. Save this as a playlist on Winamp or your mp3 player and enjoy, it's a great listen.

If you're interested in the songwriter's split: -

    Paul 8 23:24
    John 7 18:23
    George 2 07:49

J&P both get the credit for Birthday make it 7 1/2 and 6 1/2 if you wish.

4 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5 Happiness is a Warm Gun
    6 I'm So Tired

I'd put "Not Guilty" on side two, if it would fit. Maybe substitute the shorter mono version of "Helter Skelter" in order to do so. You can never have too much George.

  • Heres how you have to do it:

John: Dear Prudence, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Julia, Sexy Sadie, Revolution #1, Everybody's got something bla bla bla...

Paul: Birthday, I Will, Back In The USSR, Helter Skelter, Martha My Dear, Why Don't We Do It In The Road

    SO THEN...

    3.Martha My Dear
    4.Everybody's Got Something.. Monkey

  • RE: Pete Degan I've tried this exercise myself and it's just no use. With a single album you'd always be leaving out something great. Perhaps a three sided album like Johnny Winter's Second Winter from 1969
