Track: While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Artist: Virgin Passages

MOJO says: Rather than simply replicate George Harrison’s reflective tune and aimlessly ape Eric Clapton’s lead guitar line, Staffordshire-spawned and London-based sextet Virgin Passages have reinvented one of The White Album’s key tracks, focusing on the first lyrical line and transforming it into a hypnotic meditation. Somehow, the chanted gang vocals appear to evoke a sense of the transcendental.

  • I'm glad I listened to some of these (atrocious) cover songs of the "White Album" before buying the magazine. The songs don't sound too good, so it's probably not worth buying the mag.

  • What would be the point of a band doing a straight cover. Virgin passages seem to be the only ones who did something original and wortwhile.

  • yeah! this is one of the better interpretations but i can see it upsetting alot of Beatles fans. George would have loved it though.

  • David, please listen to the rest of the tracks. Specifically, try listening right after this track and after that. Do not deny yourself what I consider one of the greatest publications ever to grace a newsstand.

I'm absolutely disappointed how this turned out. I can sense the soul detachment of the song, but this wasn't the way to go about it.

Understandably MOJO is a magazine for people of certain tastes, but even "Back in the USSR" resembled the original song. If this followed the musical structure of WMGGW, we might have something here. Might I suggest basing it on the Anthology version?

My personal problem: Can barely understand anything these people are singing. I know what the words are, but I none of them seem to be audible.

A real sigh of relief comes with "Happiness".

Sorry Bennett but you both just have an opinion. This is a really interesting adaptation. If you want to listen to the original version just buy the White Album itself or go and see a covers band.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like a far-out version like this. Like I said, I enjoyed the fact this whole track was steely and spiritless, the central focus of the song itself.

Back to the "sounds like the original" thing, I'd honestly hate to hear this done in the final album cut style. Certain key characteristics of that song just wouldn't fit here, and in these guys' case I wouldn't want to disturb what they're creating here. At the same time, it's a little too freeform. If you listen to "Don't Pass Me By" on this disc, Field Music took a lot of creative turns with the song (even if one of them is a reference) I still listen to frequently, but that had an actual musical flow rather than floating in space. I believe Virgin Passages could have found a middle ground on this by offering some minimal sort of flow while keeping the feeling they have now.

Like I said in the last post, I'm not dissapointed by the concept but rather by the excecution. That doesn't mean it should sound like the White Album, but it shouldn't sound absolutely like this either.

An opinion is an opinion and it seems a lot of people share my opinion too. One of the letters published in MOJO this month highlighted this track amongst the best although acknowledged it was pretty far out and Ive heard this version of a fair few internet radio stations over the past few weeks but i guess. Like others have mentioned previously its not gonna appeal to a sector of Beatles mad readers but then thats the point really. The Beatles shocked their audiences and created music ahead of its time - and decades have passed since then. Alot of the music on this compilation sounds stuck in a timewarp and in all honesty anyone can knock out a Beatles cover so have therfor bought nothing new to the table. There are perhaps 3-4 tracks on this CD that are worth getting the CD for and this is one of them................"in my opinion"

  • transcendental? i'm sorry, no.
i can understand putting your own twist on a song but i want to be able to hear what song you're putting a twist onto!

  • So Tonight Radio 3 have chosen 2 songs from the MOJO White Album

    23:53
Virgin Passages: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Album: The White Album Recovered (Part 1)
    Fire Records / Mojo 0000001

    23:58
    Julie Fowlis: Blackbird
Album: The White Album Recovered (Part 1)
    Machair Records / Mojo 0000001

I think that this further vindicates the band's take on the song.
