Isaac Hayes: 1942 - 2008

Isaac Hayes, the Black Moses of soul and one of Stax Records songwriting legends, has died at his home in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 65. He was found next to a treadmill by his wife. It's believed a medical condition may have led to his death.

With Stax writing partner David Porter, Hayes penned many '60s soul standards, including Sam & Dave classics, You Don't Know Like I Know, Hold On, I’m Comin' and Soul Man. A solo career soon followed and in 1969 he released his groundbreaking opus Hot Buttered Soul. With its four sprawling tracks, including the 18-minute By The Time I Get To Phoenix, the album went on to redefine black music in America. Two years later, he won an Oscar for his theme from the movie Shaft, before making a legendary appearance in front of 100,000 at the Wattstax festival in downtown L.A.

In the mid-'90s he became known to a new generation as the booming baritone voice behind the character of Chef in Matt Stone and Trey Parker's South Park. Hayes eventually quit the show in 2006 after an episode mocked his beloved Church of Scientology.

MOJO's full obituary will follow soon.
